The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is a scenic and popular trail to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers a gradual acclimatization process with diverse landscapes, including rainforest, moorlands, and the alpine desert. This 7-day itinerary allows ample time for acclimatization, improving your chances of reaching the summit.

Trip Itinerary

  • Arrival

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Here, you’ll rest, prepare your gear, and attend a pre-climb briefing with your guides. This session ensures you’re well-prepared for the climb and understand the route itinerary.

    Hotel in Arusha or Moshi

  • Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (2,835m/9,300ft)

  • Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750m/12,300ft)

After breakfast, the trail ascends steeply, leaving the rainforest and entering the moorlands. You’ll trek along ridges with spectacular views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. After 4–6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Shira Camp, where you’ll rest and enjoy the stunning vistas

  • Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190ft) to Barranco Camp (3,950m/13,000ft)

  • Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) to Mweka Camp (3,110m/10,200ft)
