7-Day Rongai Route

Trip Overview

The Rongai Route is a unique and less crowded trail to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, starting from the northeastern side of the mountain near the Kenyan border. It is known for its dry conditions and breathtaking views of the Kenyan plains, making it an excellent choice during the rainy season. The route offers a gradual ascent, allowing for easier acclimatization, and traverses diverse ecosystems, from lush forests to rugged alpine terrain. With a shorter and direct path to the summit, it provides an adventurous and scenic experience for climbers aiming to reach Uhuru Peak. This 7-day itinerary maximizes acclimatization while offering a memorable trekking journey.

Trip Itinerary

  • Arrival

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Here, you can rest and acclimatize before the climb. During the pre-climb briefing, your guide will go over the details of the trek and check your gear to ensure you're well-prepared.

  • Accommodation

    Hotel in Arusha or Moshi

  • Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp (2,671m/8,760ft)

The adventure begins with a drive to Rongai Gate on the northern side of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. After registration, you’ll start trekking through the lush farmland and pine forest. The trail gradually ascends to Simba Camp, where you’ll settle in for your first night under the stars.

  • Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp (3,450m/11,319ft)

The trail climbs steadily through moorland, offering stunning views of Kibo Peak. You’ll arrive at Second Cave Camp after approximately 4–5 hours of trekking. This day helps with acclimatization as you ascend gradually.

  • Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m/11,811ft)

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the moorland zone, with more dramatic landscapes and fewer crowds. After about 5–6 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Kikelewa Camp, nestled in a scenic valley. Spend the afternoon relaxing and taking in the breathtaking views.

  • Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m/14,160ft)

The trail becomes steeper as you approach Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. This camp is among the most picturesque on Kilimanjaro, and the altitude makes it a critical stop for acclimatization. After 4–5 hours of trekking, you’ll spend the evening admiring the rugged terrain.

  • Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (4,720m/15,485ft)

The trek continues across the lunar-like Saddle, a wide plain between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. This day’s 5–6 hour hike is a relatively gentle ascent, but the altitude and barren landscape make it challenging. You’ll reach Kibo Hut by late afternoon and rest early in preparation for the summit attempt.

  • Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,205ft)

The summit push begins just after midnight. You’ll ascend to Gilman’s Point (5,681m/18,638ft) on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for the night. This is the longest and most demanding day of the trek.

  • Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,870m/6,135ft)

The final descent takes you through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, you’ll receive your summit certificate and enjoy a farewell lunch before driving back to Moshi or Arusha for a relaxing evening or onward travel.
